Tsunami benefit gig
26 January 2005 A big thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the Moles Asia Fundraiser a great success. The bands were all fantastic as was the amazingly generous audience. I personally saw a few people donating up to £20 on the door which is brilliant! I hope you all enjoyed the night and don't let the dying media coverage trick you into thinking the crisis is over. Having finally counted our pennies we can reveal that the night took £2000 for the DEC (www.dec.org.uk). On top of this money we are also adding in the £350 we raised for Fred William's charity gig last July as he wanted it to go to Save The Children who benefit from donations to the DEC. The Porter has already banked £300 into the DEC account which was donated by customers at the bar. A further £140 will be sent directly to Khujum island in Thailand as a small gesture of thanks for the generous help they gave members of The Porter and Moles staff who where staying on the island when the Tsunami struck They were extremely lucky to escape. The Islanders arranged for them to be airlifted away and gave them food and clothing even though they themselves were suffering under the tragic circumstances. Thanks to you all again for your support and generosity. Below is an extract from an article written by one of britains leading campaign Journalists John Pilger. printed in the Morning Star on January 8th. The article originally appeared in the New Statesman.
The Blair Government's current 'generous' contribution is a 16th of the £800m that it spent bombing Iraq before the invasion and barely a 20th of a billion pound gift, known as a 'soft loan' to the Indonesian military so that it could acquire Hawk fighter bombers.
