29 November 2006 Poor Old Henry – Carpet vs. Floorboards
If you happen to be a regular visitor to The Porter you may have noticed the subtle changes that have been occurring over the last few months, new cushion covers, a spanking new paint job and even brand new pictures on the walls. Well now its time for the big one. The carpet.
The carpet in The Porter is long past its prime and often looks as old as the pub itself! So the controversial decision was made to rip it up and take a look at the floorboards underneath and although it has been suggested that this move may well turn the place into another trendy wine bar, as has been the fate of a few old bath pubs recently, I’d disagree. The Porter is and always will be The Porter regardless of the type of flooring.
Work started on Sunday night and already the bar area is complete, looking cleaner and fresher but just as rustic as ever. Work is to continue over the week however we will be open for business as usual, unless otherwise stated. The reasons for the change are nothing out of the ordinary, the floor boards should be easier to keep clean, won’t submit to burns from cigarette butts and won’t trap dust and mites as carpet is known to do. And, well it should give the place a new look for the New Year.
So come down and judge for yourself, but when you do remember to spare a thought for poor old Henry Hoover, the only real casualty in all this. You see he may well have to be made redundant.
