Xmas and New Year round-up
![]() Stock Exchange logo 05 January 2004 Time for a Xmas and New Year roundup of events at the Porter and Moles Club. Well this year the festive season went quite well – it’s always difficult to get it right though. Most people think that Xmas is a bit of a bonanza for clubs and pubs, but in fact what happens is that people stop going out so much in the first 2 weeks of December so they can really party at Xmas and New Year. If you take into account that over the holiday period people don’t really go out on the weekend after Xmas, and that we can’t open Xmas day, and it’s not surprising that the figures for December are about the same as November. Still this year it was better than usual. The Comedy Cavern was also quite busy over the period, and was definitely better than last year. Even New Years Eve was good for us at the Porter, although some pubs like the Saracen’s Head were pretty quiet. Of course there was the usual mass exodus at 11.45pm for those who like to jig around in front of the Abbey at midnight, or who had other parties to go to. But not long after midnight, folk started to trickle back in waving their handstamps. Apparently we were one of the cheapest city centre pubs in Bath (we charged £3.50, where others were charging a tenner or more), and maybe that was why we were so busy. In Moles, the Xmas Special organized by Glasstone and Resurrection was immensely successful and the band that Greg booked went down very well, and the club was very busy. Xmas eve is always difficult, as we have to close at 12.30am due to the ridiculous licensing laws in the UK – write to your MP! New Years Even in the club was our busiest ever I think with a record number of people coming in to have a good time. Again I think we were one of the cheapest in town – £6 members and £7 guests. I like to keep things affordable for normal people, and this year I think it worked well. The only downer over the Xmas period was that I had to break down the door in the Porter Cellar Bar, as one reveller who’d overindulged decided to fall asleep on the loo. I should have taken a photo of him asleep and posted it on the net! All in all though it was a very good Xmas for us all at Moles. I hope you all had a good one too. Roll on next year.
