The Porter goes no-smoking in the "New Room"
16 March 2004 After receiving a circular from BANES, asking what our no-smoking policy was, we decided to bring forward a change that has been in the pipeline for quite some time - namely making the "New Room" in the Porter non-smoking. Don't get too excited just yet if you're a non-smoker, we're just doing it from 11am-5.30pm, and waiting to see what the reaction is to the new policy. I was intending to make the new room totally non-smoking when the works were done to improve the shop-front. We would have had to close the room for a week or two, and I thought we could bring in the change without too much adverse comment when we re-opened the room. Of course these days, with non-smokers campaigning very heavily for non-smoking pubs etc, it is inevitable that all pubs will have to provide proper non-smoking areas, and may be forced to become non-smoking in their entirety. I think that drinkers tend to be smokers, but of course you can't know, because many non-smokers don't go to pubs - for the simple reason that they are too smokey! We'll have to wait and see - the new signs should go up to-morrow - Becky, and the photocopier being willing. Now that I have an 18month old son, I can see how annoying it is not to have a non-smoking place where you can eat for parents of young children. I'll be interested to see how this innovation goes down. We won't of course be the first in Bath to have a proper no-smoking bar or area - The Green Tree did it some while ago, and I think the Belvedere has one too. We've deliberately put the times so that they coincide with when most people tend to eat in the pub, as I think smoking and eating really don't go together if you don't smoke yourself - we'll just have to see how it goes........ |
