Soirée Café Français
New espresso coffee machine for the Porter!
Well, I think this qualifies as fun stuff - for me it does, as I like drinking the stuff!
The Porter has just taken delivery of a brand new espresso machine! What's really cool about this one, is that it can do both ordinary and decaf, and even better it grinds it freshly for every cup! Usually with decaf, it's been sitting around for a few weeks in an old tin waiting for someone to order it (well it mostly tastes like it has). So out with the old rubbish filter machine and in with the new one!
The other nice thing about the machine is that the company that are renting it to us do a line of organic fair trade coffees, and they are delicious. I tried one fresh out of the spout yesterday and it tasted perfect. We've even got a picture of the wee beastie..... however a picture may be worth a thousand words, but it's no substitute for a fresh cup of coffee though.... But you know where to get one now.
The date: Monday 15th February 2003 from seven o'clock.
Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of our Cafe francais, in the old tradition of Voltaire and Sartre who frequented the Parisian "literary cafes" of the time, but in the friendly, and relaxed ambience of a local hostelry.
The second of these events, organised by l'Alliance Francaise of Bath, will take place on the above evening in the ground floor quiet room next to the main bar. The only condition - talk in french!
We'll be discussing all manner of diverse topics, including books, films, perhaps even politics .... You will also have the chance to learn to play "belote" a french card game, as well as scrabble in french. There is no entry charge. Another event at The Porter, this time on a Monday evening, and in the “quiet room” on the ground floor. This news item, is maybe not fun stuff, strictly speaking, but it certainly needs looking at:-
BUBBLING UNDER
Bubbling Under is the title of a new series of alternative video screenings, to take place on Sunday afternoons at The Porter, George Street, Bath, staring in January.
Bubbling Under is the idea of Philip Andrews, owner of The Porter: "I was at this years Big Green Gathering, an ecologically aware, and counter culture type of event. There was an outfit there, called ‘Groovy Movie’, who were showing films of various GM crop protesters ripping up GM crops, and being arrested by the police for this. There were also some harrowing scenes of protesters being brutally beaten by police at the Genoa anti-globalization demonstrations. There was also footage of journalists being beaten up whilst filming, and having their equipment trashed. I was really moved by the heroism and bravery of these people, and thought there must be something that I can do to make people more aware of this kind of stuff."
With videos and invited speakers, every three weeks Bubbling Under will be a showcase for important issues which don’t get adequate coverage in the mainstream media. It will cover topics such as human rights, animal rights, environmental issues, and the peace movement. Bubbling Under will give people who care an opportunity to find out about some of the important issues that affect us today.

Bubbling Under kicks off on Sunday January 12th at 1pm with "Kalachakra", a video about Tibetan refugees in India, made by an independent video production company in Somerset. Film maker Gaynor O'Flynn will be showing and talking about her documentary made in the remote Himalayas.
Bubbling Under is being organized by a group of people in Bath who have been active in various pressure groups for many years. David Beasley, organizer of the first screening, said “I saw the Kalachakra video in August, and I was immensely moved by the passion and commitment of the Tibetan people protesting about the Chinese occupation of their homeland. The video provides an amazing insight into what life is like for those living in the remote valleys of the Himalayas. I resolved that I would find some way to bring this video to a wider audience.”
Further details of this and subsequent Bubbling Under events can be found on The Porter website: http://www.theporter.co.uk/porter.

“Kalachakra”
What drives a man to douse himself in petrol, and set it alight? In particular, a Buddhist - normally known for their commitment to non-violence?
After witnessing this horrific event in Delhi, Gaynor O’Flynn decides to find out what drove this man to commit suicide. Her personal quest takes her on a journey to one of the most remote and stunningly beautiful valleys of the Indian Himalayas. Along the way, she makes some surprising discoveries, as she meets not only westerners in search of enlightenment, but also Buddhist monks playing pool and sadhus smoking dope.
Along with thousands of pilgrims, she takes part in the Dalai Lama's Ceremony for World Peace, Kalachakra. The Kalachakra teachings are intended to help Buddhists to find the mystical kingdom of Shambhala, a land of enlightened human beings. This land of perfect happiness cannot be reached by any highway or footpath; to get there first you must learn to journey within...
This video uncovers the strength of feeling the Tibetans have about the Chinese occupation of their homeland. It shows what life is like for thousands of Tibetans forced to live in exile, and explores why so many westerners are drawn to Tibetan Buddhism and the cause of the liberation of Tibet.
4. Bubbling Under will happen every 3 weeks. Future events planned so far are:
2 February “A better world is possible” – films from recent European anti-capitalism and anti-war events
23 February “Animal Rights” – undercover footage from vivisection laboratories
16 March “Ancient futures”
6 April “Stop the War”
27 April “McLibel”
