3D and David Leat

3D were supported this evening by singer/songwriter David Leat who played for about half an hour. He came across as relaxed and friendly with a high vocal range and an impressive falsetto. In fact he was quite a physically built guy so it was interesting to hear a more feminine vocal style coming from a very masculine looking guy. He began with a song called 'Long Way Round' and followed it with a song called 'Cracks' which he had just finished that day having worked on it for over a year. This was followed by two mellow numbers before we got a cover of a cover, 'Satisfied Mind' as Jeff Buckley played it. A great song and a good effort. David admitted it wasn't the easiest song to play. He finished his set with a cool upbeat bluesy number. A relaxing and enjoyable set.
3D are three female sisters who play soulful acoustic based songs with a popular commercial edge to them. Their use of vocal harmonies was great reminding me of female groups like The Corrs. The sister on the far left played keys, the one on the far right played bongos and the girl in the middle with dyed red hair stood and played acoustic guitar. She had a great presence and acted as a central focus for the group moving to the music as she played.
All the girls sang and their voices merged extremely well. After saying "Good evening" twice due to no one replying they opened with the song 'Kooky' about doing things like dying your hair red! They played a couple of songs from their album 'Sister Acoustic" and "cheesed it up" with a cover that must be extrenely cheesy because I'd never heard it before! My favourite song was all about being a prostitute and the girls sang some good dark minor harmonies which was followed by a song about "waking up and thinking what did I do last! night?".
Another mellow cover was played interestingly by a local band called Never The Bride. The song 'Mojo' contained a slick bongo introduction whilst the keyboardist played the shaker. A few more covers were played including a request for a Hanson song (oh shit!) which led us into the more serious subject of a friend who lost his brother with the words "we could make this complicated, lonliness is overrated". This ended with an upbeat song about causing harm to men. Genius. Very accessable songs with a commercial feel which created a chilled out and light-hearted atmosphere. The fact that they were three young pretty sisters also helped. To comment on this review or gig go to the forum section for this: Comment on gig or band Ed Hutchinson |
