Furlined

It’s been a while since I put my reviewing hat on (its on the left next to the pork pie) so on Wednesday night I thought I’d head down to Porter and see what music was on offer. Furlined were tonight’s entertainment, a 4-piece with a laid-back country sound that was perfect for the mellow ‘sat at a table having a quiet pint’ night that I was after. Their female cello player added a nice touch as the cello always does. The frontman had a very clear deep vocal that complimented the country vibe. Their first song dealt with combat zones and camouflage and a plea of “give my respects to everyone and a kiss for my mother, raise a glass to me when you can’. The late night cruising theme tune ‘Road To Searchlight’ followed with visions of highway 61 and a warm night air gently blowing my cheek. They had a nice selection of foot tapping rhythms without being too intrusive. A love song called ’15 seconds’ was played towards the end of the first set. “I am not, never have been, bad luck. I have not, never should be, stood up. Stay close to me, you’ve got my eyes and my mischief.” My brother arrived just before the end of the first set and we sat and discussed various musical techniques before getting onto philosophy, drunkenness and women (that’s another story). Meanwhile Furlined returned after a 15-minute break with a song that I think was called ‘Graceless’. I was finding it progressively harder to hear the frontmans intro of song titles so if I have any wrong I apologise! This song contained the genius lyric “Back in the days before my chemist became a pharmacy”. Down to Earth and strangely romantic. The second set contained a waltzy number from their three years in the making album followed by a re-visiting of three songs from the first set. The ‘stay close to me’ song was introduced this time around as the first song the group ever wrote when they first began as a duo. Although we’d already heard the songs it kind of worked as a good ending to their performance. The final song was called ‘Telephone Box’ and was all about first love and first lust. It reminded me of a photo I took of a beautiful red head in a phonebox and I went home feeling relaxed and contained in a bubble of sorts. A quiet and relaxing evening that was a nice change to some of the mental ones I’ve had lately. Cheers Furlined Ed Cesar |
