The support act tonight were Cherry Falls who I missed. I did however get told that they were fronted by a petit young woman with a very soft and ethereal (a word that is becoming very commonplace in my writing lately) voice. Kaytu followed suit. A six-piece consisting of 2 guitars, drums, bass, our favourite Bath cello player Beth and a beautiful bohemian young woman on vocals with long flowing hair (I'm trying not to make this sound like a fashion parade). In their write up they were described as folk-tinged celtic rock. A fair description. The folk element was in there and the Celtic description can be applied to that otherworldly enchanting and once again ethereal style of music (usually female fronted) that I'm constantly trying to find a name for. A band who I've recently got into at home called Rasputina is a classic example and of course artists like Cocteau Twins contain that otherworldly feel. Kaytu were in the same bracket but slightly rockier and slightly more ra! w. I really liked the first song that was introduced as being a new song. It played on the slightly dark mystical element of the 'celtic' genre. 'Into The Sea' was second with a building rhthm section and the words "just walking into the sea, can't turn back no more". A similiar climatic formula was used in 'Obstacles'..."he can't go on, he leads a life of pain." The frontwoman sounded Australian but I think they may be based in Bath. A very smooth bossa nova vibe was instigated in 'Fate' which complimented the frontwomans charisma really well. This was followed by 'Stay' and the lyrics "I saw the future and it won't let me be". They played a further three or four numbers including 'House' and 'Priorities' before their set finished. In general I enjoyed them and found them to be a relaxing listen. About three of their songs used the mystical feel really well and the frontwomans vocal melodies sounded enchanting. At times some of the songs lacked a little diversity and the ! vocal came across as bland. The band were really tight and they already have an individual sound that certainly has the capacity to get better. A pleasant and enjoyable evenings entertainment. Ed Cesar |
