Kuwarto
![]() kuwarto 26 June 2007 I watched and reviewed this band I guess about a year ago. Couldn't remember anything about them to be honest so went to have a little look see. For the majority of their set they were playing to an extremely minimal audience most of which had their backs to them. The show must go on however and frontwoman Kaz kept smiling and more importantly singing and playing guitar all the way through. Kaz is from Manila in the Philippians. I lived in Asia for a long time myself and I remember seeing hugely talented starry-eyed Filipino singers playing in hotel lobbies and late nightclubs again and again and again. Years spent mastering the music, the moves and the voice of their favourite performers in the hope of stardom. Kaz and her band are not hotel lobby music but they managed to master a multitude of styles which they fuse together extremely well. They are a very tight unit. On arrival they were on a sleazy rock vibe as Kaz sang "Give me reason to love you" in a dirty yet soulful growl. The next song ‘Chasing Shadows' was completely different. A 1970s funk mini-epic with jazz overtones. It began as a 5 minute instrumental before an inevitable tempo change and lyrics about chasing shadows in the rain. A cool cover of the song ‘Lovecats' preceded a more blues driven song called ‘Hazel Eyes' before they ended with ‘When Your Faithful', a standard rock song with Americana/country overtones. Kaz even adapted her voice to fit the style of music. Good musicians who would go down really well in a busy club (rather than a hotel lobby!). Ed Cesar |
